The Future of the Past is a pioneering project which creates a space for different art forms to collide and interact in order to give rise to new creative processes and push the boundaries of what we know as heritage today. Kolkata as a city has been continually re-mapped by shifting cross-currents of trade and labour, ideologies and visions, solidarities and conflicts. Kolkata’s heritage lives in tangibles and intangibles across the city and its people. The Future of the Past is a project envisaged by Team Future that intends to connect the new generation of Kolkata’s youth to its own past and heritage. After a successful Season I that reached out to over 180,000 people mostly youth in 3 months through its five unique projects that recaptured the energies of lost modes of transport to forgotten architectural constructs to neglected artistic traditions and institutions, we are ready to begin Season II this winter 2016-17 with the spotlight on Kolkata’s ethnically diverse history of communities.

The eclectic history of diverse immigrant communities shapes and leaves an indelible imprint on a city. Kolkata is a ‘melting pot’ of migrant Armenians, Chinese, Jews, Anglo-Indians, and Greeks. Their traditions, reflected through cultural and occupational practices, food habits, dressing, and architecture, lend identity to the broader landscape of the city. Passage of time and altered socio-economic circumstances threaten to erode this shared cultural heritage. Why also miss the forgotten professional communities like the naapits(barbers), bhistis( water bearers), dhunwais (cotton carders), Tana rickshaw walas and many such or taking an ironic take on the subject with the bonedi bangalis etc. The project invites the new generation to to look through the window of time and bring alive for us that past where all these communities built the fabric of public life in Kolkata.

If you are a creative person below 30 yrs of age, think out of the box and have a heart that beats for Kolkata then you could help us build ‘The Future of the Past’. Inviting applications from Photographers / Film Makers / Musicians / Fashion Designers / Poets / Dancers / Theater groups and other creative people, this is your chance of making your creativity count. Choose a heritage community that interests you and set about to explore their history and contemporary reality.

Help us rediscover, remap, reveal, celebrate and document the fading heritage of the City of Joy.
